The Cuchy Frito Crew has been working on this one for a minute. Inspired by Mexican Wrestling (Lucha Libre), we have put together a backbreaker for 2011. The mix features a ton of mash-ups, cumbia, salsa, classic hip hop, and raps from some of our friends such as Anansé (NYC), Zalama Crew (Cali, Colombia), and Alianza Meka (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic). DE CALI A CALIFAS - PARTE 1

I’ve been to Cali, Colombia a few times in the past year and have had the great pleasure of getting to know some very talented hip hop artists and graphic designers known as Zalama Crew. In December I brought them some instrumentals on vinyl and the listening session quickly turned into a freestyle session. We decided we should record something the next day. We recorded a live mix with 3 MCs (Bing, Doble A, and Maikcel) and 2 DJs (myself and DJ Cronic). I wasn’t happy with the recording so I took their acapellas laid them over a new mix when I got back to California. I returned to Colombia in March and mastered the mix with DJ Cronic. We also recorded a new mix (part 2 – forthcoming) that is more centered on the theme of a connection between Cali and California. Both mixes are almost entirely in Spanish and I tried to get creative and mix their vocals over salsa, reggae, hip hop and cumbia. The lyrical content is mostly conscious in nature, but even if you don’t understand Spanish you might appreciate the music. Please forward the link to anybody that might enjoy it.

He visitado Cali, Colombia tres veces en el último año y he tenido el gran placer de conocer un colectivo de artistas de hip hop y diseño gráfico conocido como Zalama Crew. En diciembre llegué con unos vinilos de instrumentales y estos huevones empezaron a rapear freestyle al tiro. Decidimos grabar una mezcla el próximo día con 3 raperos (Bing, Doble A, y Maikcel) y 2 DJs (DJ Cronic y yo). No estaba satisfecho con la mezcla original entonces grabé otra mezcla usando las acapelas cuando regresé a California. En marzo volví a Cali para corregir la mezcla y grabar otra (parte 2 – que estamos produciendo todavía) que se trata mejor del tema del vínculo que hemos hecho entre Cali y California. Traté de hacer algo original con las dos mezclas, combinando las acapelas con pistas de salsa, reggae, e hip hop. Aparte del hecho que estos huevones son talentosos, sus versos son de consciencia y expresan pasión para el arte de hip hop, la ciudad de Cali, y el pueblo colombiano.
